WHAT ARE POOL TEST KITS?
If you own a swimming pool, then you normally have to check and test chemical levels to ensure safety. This tool kit is used for just that. This is used to routinely check for the following in your pool water.
- Total alkalinity
- Acid demand
Don’t worry if you’re not science-savvy nor an experienced pool owner —pool test kits are designed to be easy to use, and most kits will come with detailed instructions in their package.
They are used to sample your pool water and test its water chemistry. It is also useful in showing how much pool chemicals you need to mix into the water to achieve optimal levels.
POOL TEST KITS IN THE PHILIPPINES FROM OKTAKEM
At Oktakem, we carry a few standard kits for testing water chemistry. There are two types in our store: kits with liquid reagents, and kits with test strips. Here is an in-depth look into what each pool testing kit entails, and its benefits.
HAYWARD 2-IN-1 TEST KITS
Our Hayward 2-in-1 Test Kits can be used to conduct a pH, chlorine, and bromine test.
This kit is a reagent type, which is used to create chemical reactions with pool water samples. These chemical reactions result in color-coded readings. While using this kit may need some more input on your part, they provide highly accurate results. And, this pool testing kit comes with a handy, easy-to-understand chart that denotes the value a particular chemical has in the pool water sample.>
This is generally more accurate than using test strips, so we recommend using this kit for regular pool maintenance.
MERCK PH TEST STRIPS
Oktakem’s Merck pH Test strips are incredibly easy to use for measuring your pool’s pH levels. All you need to do is take a strip from the box, swirl it in a pool water sample, and wait.
Once in contact with pool water, the reagents on the test strips will start a chemical reaction, and cause the strip to discolor. Once the strip has stopped changing colors, you simply compare the color against the provided color chart to determine the pH level.
This pool test kit is recommended for simple and quick checks on your pool, in between big maintenance and chemical applications.
CHLORINE TEST STRIPS LOW RANGE
Similar to the Merck pH test strips, these are easy to use and show results in mere seconds. Our Low Level Chlorine test strip detects residual chlorine from 0-20ppm. Its results are generally accurate within 5-10% of reading the color scale. Each bottle contains 50 strips. Ideal for pools that are frequently used.
CHLORINE TEST STRIPS HIGH RANGE
Another convenient way to test water for higher range levels of chlorine. This pool testing kit is used to detect residual chlorine from 0ppm to 2000ppm. Like the previous, its results are very accurate. Each bottle contains 100 strips.
SOLUTIONS FOR TESTING
These products are for reagent refills for our reagent pool testing kits. Note that reagents from different brands or suppliers may not properly work with our products. This is why Oktakem provides a guaranteed supply of reagent refills.

HOW DO I USE A POOL TEST KIT?
There is no set guideline for when to conduct tests on pool water chemistry. But, generally, it is recommended that you test a pool at least once or twice a week. Here is how to conduct your pool water tests:
CHOOSE A POOL WATER QUALITY TESTING KIT
As we mentioned, there are two different kinds of pool testing kits from Oktakem that you can use. Both are fast and easy, but a reagent testing kit requires more precision to provide highly accurate and detailed results.
PREPARE YOUR POOL FOR THE TEST
Your pool should be running for at least an hour before testing. We recommend turning off jets and skimmers before taking a water sample. Always wash your hands with clean water but without soap before taking the sample.
When taking a sample, draw water from a depth of at least 18 inches for a more accurate reading.
FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED IN THE KIT
To get proper readings, be sure to check the instructions. Each pool testing kit from our store will come with clear and specific guidelines. Make sure to follow them closely, especially if you’re inexperienced with testing kits or using an unfamiliar kit.
Test strips only need to be exposed to a pool water sample and will provide a reading within seconds. But, reagent tests require a precise ratio of pool water to reagent solutions and thorough mixing. Within a minute or so, the water should change color and can be measured against the color standards indicated on the plastic tester.
ADJUST POOL CHEMICAL BALANCE AS NEEDED
Consult the color chart that comes with your pool testing kit. Based on your readings, adjust the tested pool chemical as needed. You may need to take extra precautions in measuring chemicals like chlorine granules when fixing your pool water chemistry.
OPEN YOUR POOL
Once you have thoroughly tested and adjusted your water’s chemistry, your pool should be fit for use.
